Emmanuel recalled her mother's first awareness of her love of acting and the desire to become an actress while she was in school at St Hilda's School. This school closed in 2014 and changed into Westcliff High School. In an interview with New York Daily News, she revealed, "When my mom was three, she always caused drama, so she thought maybe I should channel her energy properly. So I began learning to act, sing, and dance classes." At the age of 10 she was cast as Young Nala, the West End's version of The Lion King. Then she was cast as Missandei in HBO's fantasy drama Game of Thrones. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she confirmed that she had received the news about winning the role when she was employed in a clothes store as a shop assistant. Emmanuel was made an official cast member on the show in the year 2015. Missandei is the sole prominent female character on the show, was a woman of color. The scene in which she died in chains was not popular with viewers. The scene was also criticized as an example of deceit and also evoked images of slavery. Emmanuel later stated to The Guardian: The response to her death was huge because she was alone. I think a lot of people who felt marginalized or excluded were in a relationship with her or felt that they were represented by her especially women of color. The people were devastated when she passed away, and it was so tragically. This is the way they intend to pay tribute to the one woman in their own race.
